Zaid calls Karpal a ‘liar’ and a ‘snake’

December 20, 2010

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 20 — Datuk Zaid Ibrahim lashed out today at Karpal Singh for allegedly insulting him during Pakatan Rakyat’s convention over the weekend and called the DAP chairman a “liar, celaka and a snake”.
Zaid also pledged that he would soon sue Karpal for committing defamation when he allegedly called him “Mahathir’s hatchet man” and accused him of masterminding the torching of the Bar Council building in 1988.
Writing in a bitter-sounding press statement today, Zaid (picture) stomped on Karpal’s allegations and accused the wheelchair-bound lawyer for being neither “a hero nor a lion but a snake”.
“Karpal Singh called me Mahathir’s hatchet man. Strange indeed that this hatchet man was not even allowed to take riding lessons in Taman Ekuestrian Putrajaya.
“Karpal the great abuser also called me a ‘celaka’ and that I allegedly organised a group of Umno gangsters to burn the Bar Council building in 1988 over the Salleh Abbas case. Now, this makes Karpal Singh a liar and a celaka.
“Those who stood and gave him a standing ovation at the Pakatan convention are mistaken. He is not a hero nor a lion, but a snake,” Zaid wrote.
He also harped on Karpal’s role in the sodomy trials of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, reminding that while today Karpal was representing the opposition leader in court, it was him who had earlier been convinced of Anwar’s guilt.
“It was this snake that in October 1997 in Parliament called on the government and badgered the Speaker to expedite the investigations on Anwar Ibrahim for the sodomy charges because the snake had allegedly met the victims and sighted all the statutory declarations.
“This snake was convinced of Anwar’s guilt,” he said.
Zaid added that before Karpal became Anwar’s legal counsel in the ongoing Sodomy 2 trial, the DAP leader himself had lambasted Anwar and had questioned his position as opposition leader.
“Now he is counsel for Sodomy 2 and all is well. In fact, after (Mohd) Saiful (Bukhari Azlan), he knows everything about Anwar and it will be difficult for Anwar to extricate himself from the clutches of DAP,” he said.
Zaid then mocked Anwar, his former ally in PR, claiming that the PKR de facto leader was at the mercy of leaders like Karpal, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali and others.
“Poor Anwar. He is a prisoner; in the clutches of Azmin, Karpal and God knows who else,” he said.
Zaid, who is now president of his newfound Kesejahteraan Insan Tanah Air (Kita) party, added with the behaviour of PR leaders, it was now increasingly difficult to ever see eye to eye with the opposition pact.
“When I was asked if I will be PR or BN friendly, I replied that Kita would be an issue-based political party. We are not anxious to prove our pedigree; we are confident that Malaysians will judge us by our sincerity and the strength of our convictions so we are not about to become friendly with any faction to score brownie points.
“If we do become one, it is because of the convergence of our viewpoints.
“However it has become increasingly difficult to become friendly with PR. That is because some of their top leaders are liars,” he said.
One of these “liars”, added Zaid, was Anwar himself who had once called him a “Trojan horse” and had also denied that he was ever the PR co-ordinator.
“Never mind. Now his protector Karpal Singh called me Mahathir’s hatchet man. So we will see if he will sue me for calling him a snake. I will definitely sue him for the lies he uttered yesterday. Thank God I joined PR; only by being with them one knows their true colours,” he concluded.
Zaid quit PKR recently while in the running for the party’s deputy presidency, complaining of election malpractices and irregularities.
His contender, Azmin, who is said to be Anwar’s close confidante and right-hand man, later went on to clinch the post.
